Al's Grill

I recently took my elderly parents into Al's Grill (I live only a few blocks away). We were treated so disrespectfully that we left before we were seated (after a nearly 30 minute wait, mind you). The rude person at the door actually FOLLOWED US OUT, shouting rude remarks at us as we left! Not worth the risk for Denny-esque food! Cons: Rude Staff, mediocre food more

I moved just down the street from Al's Grill and by my 3rd visit I was considered a regular. The food comes hot and fast and the setting reminds me of a simpler, friendlier time where people know your name. I bring all my out of town guests here for breakfast/lunch and all agree that it's a nice little place on Madison Ave. more

I've been going to Al's for 25+ years. It was originally open 24 hours and located kitty corner from it's present spot. The food is great and inexpensive with friendly service. The potatoes are REAL and delicious. Greek style french toast is not served but, the plain old bread is more than sufficient. The daily specials are always good and the homeade soups are fantastic. more

My husband and I had frequented Al's Grill when it was a small diner. We loved it. Now that they're bigger and have expanded their menu we still like it. The food is just as good as it ever was and the staff is wonderful. The only complaint I have is now that we have a 5 month old son and I'm hesitant to dine there from the smoke. We are not smokers. I have been to many restaurants around chicago and have very rarely found a place with such superb food, incredible ambiance and a very curtious staff. My wait for a table on a Sunday Morning (which I assume is a typically busy time of day) was minimal, around 6 minutes. My server, Claire, was a vibrant waitress and ran ragged to ensure my meal and experience would be pleasurable. After eating a delicious ""Al's Skillet,"" a mountain layered with hashbrowns, onions, green peppers, ham, bacon, sausage and shredded chedder, topped off with 2 eggs cooked over easy. A cup of hot, fresh coffee completed an indeed very wonderful meal. The prices are also very much within reason; my complete breakfast with beverage and tip cost less than $9. I went here b/c I saw it as one of the top 10 places here on citysearch and was really disappointed. It is below average if anything, I had french toast which was on regular bread and hash browns looks like just came out of the frozen bags you buy at a grocery store. Coffee was nothing special either, I don't know who voted this top but at best, it is just a little above Denys. Pros: size of restaurant Cons: food, service more
