Editorial review from Citysearch 8/7/2013

I'm writing this to inform people of my experience at Akai hana Sushi And Grill. On Thursday August 1st my grandmother, aunt, and myself witnessed the manager/chef spit into our salmon skin salads. He prepped the salads at the bar and walked off to a corner at the end of the bar with one of the salads and spat into it and handed it to my aunt. At that time my grandmother had witnessed him do that and warned my aunt not to eat it because she thinks she seen him spit into it but wasn't sure. My aunt then asked for a to go box from the waitress and put it in the to go box. So at that point we became alert and began to watch his actions. He they proceeded to take the second salad off to the same corner and began to spit in the salad again. At that point we stood up and hollered across the bar, ""Hey Steve why did you just spit in the salads? We just seen you! What did we do to you for you to do that?"" He got so nervous and began to studder and not know what to say. So immediately we called the police and waited for them to arrive. Steve came towards us apologizing saying that he only tasted the salads and not spit into them and that there was no need to call the police. We told Steve to stay away from us so he went back inside. When the police arrived we explained the incident that occurred and they asked for the proof. Out of the heat of the moment we had left the to go box with the first salad in it on the sushi bar. So i went in to retrieve it and to my surprise it was gone and our seats had been cleaned off. I asked for the to go box and Steve pulled it out from under the counter and when I opened it it had been diluted with water and ice. I showed it the police and they said the evidence had been tampered with and therefore was useless. I walked back inside to throw it away and Steve said, ""no keep it so you can test for my DNA."" I told him that was not an options because they had tampered with it. I then proceeded to ask for the second salad and he said it had been tossed. So we left dismayed. more

Terrible service, won't go back there 10/10/2010

The food was decent, but not as good as I thought it would be, but the service was atrocious. It was my first and last time going there. I went there last night to order take-out and the guy at the counter told me I had to wait while he finished up his paperwork first, then disappeared. It was like he forgot I was there because he never came back. I had to get the attention of someone else to help me. more

Very Disappointing. 8/19/2010

After having our first date at Akai Hana Sushi we were amazingly pleased with our service and the quality of our food. Being creatures of habit we chose to revisit the restaurant for our Anniversary yesterday and the service was much less than what we had come to expect from Akai Hana. Our server, Kevin, was polite and forgot to bring us plates, napkins and our drink refills. After canceling our second round of beverages we left. I attempted to call and speak with a manager or owner and was hung up on! In attempting to reach someone via their online site I was able to put in my note and then was told the site no longer existed! I am sad to say that we will not be revisiting the location of our FIRST DATE and truly hope they can work out the details to make their restaurant as good as it was before. more

good place to start 10/7/2007

This is a good restaurant to start with if you're interested in trying sushi.\r My favorites were among the shrimp tempura and the godzilla. The shrimp one was very good; I liked the crispiness of it. The godzilla was much larger, and a more wide array of flavor. I also had the potstickers here, and if they were a little cheaper, I'd definitely order more!! (one order is like four pieces).\r The prices can be a little high, and the sushi isn't as filling as some of the other restaurants I've been to, but again, it's a good place to start if you're planning on trying out sushi.\r \r ((by the way, it's behind the marie calendar's -- facing Northern Ave in the strip mall (name is something different though, but it says sushi)). Pros: location for central phoenix, great ""starter"" place, good food Cons: prices, can be difficult to find, good customer service varies, definitely is busy during evening hours more

Definately decent 4/5/2007

I've been going to Mr. Sushi for years now, although, I don't visit much anymore. The quality of the sushi has gone down quite a bit from 4-5 years ago when I first ate there. The rolls aren't as big or as filled. Still, I would definately recommend it to people who want to have pretty good sushi for a good price. The staff is also pretty curtious. I would recommend going around the end of lunch, there are less people and in the busier hours (dinner, begining of lunch) the wait for food is definately longer. Even still, the staff doesn't realy ignore you. If the waiters/waitresses are busy, the bus boy will come up from his duties and ask you if you would like a refill on your drink. My recommendations for food would be the mackerel sashimi, the Mr. Shushi roll, tobiko sushi and, the old stand by, the tuna sushi/sashimi. Pros: Staff is very accomidating, good price Cons: Longer wait during dinner hours, quality has gone down some more

Great Place Lunch and Dinner 10/9/2005

If you aren't just going out for japanese to be seen at a trendy place, this is the place for you. The food is great, the rolls are unique and delicous, and at the end you don't end up wondering what you paid for. Pros: Sushi, Specialty Rolls Cons: Strip Mall Atmosphere more

average sushi 12/30/2003

There are real Japanese working at the restaurant, but I did see a non Japanese working the Sushi bar working with a Japanese looking chef (I did not get to check him out). My order of sushi plate at a table, instead of at the bar, had a good amount of sushi for the money, but the presentation was not very good. The tuna rolls were just rolling on their sides, instead of sitting up to show the quality of tuna! The nori (sea weed) was tough and the rice was too warm. There was too much liquid coming off the ginger and sushi was drowning in it. Overall, the restaurant was better than average for a restaurant in this country. Saito Pros: Clean, Good Menu, Friendly Cons: Hard to find, average sushi more

Great value, great food. 7/4/2003

Mr. Sushi has great food (Sushi and Shashimi) at reasonable prices. They have a wide variety of delicious hand rolls, regular rolls, speciality rolls and others. They have shrimp tempura, terryaki and other food for those squemish about sushi and/or shashimi. Pros: Delicious, Affordable, Good Service Cons: Sometimes Busy more

Dollar for Dollar 9/6/2002

Dollar for dollar it's the best value in town. By far, the lunch sushi special is a steal.... 5 handrolls for under $6. Also, the chef special off the dinner menu can feed 2 people for under $20... you get both sashimi and sushi. The chef and service are pretty good at this busy restuarant. Pros: food, price, service more
